The English Language Institute (ELI) is committed to equipping your international students with the English skills they need to thrive in their academic programs.
Who can take ELI courses?
Any international undergraduate or graduate student at Texas A&M can take ELI courses to improve their English while working toward their primary degree. Students cannot web register for ELI courses.
To enroll in an ELI course, the student’s advisor should send us an email request to firstname.lastname@example.org like the following: Please enroll [Student Name], [UIN] in [ELI course] for the [Term] Semester, [Year].
Once we have received an e-mail from the advisor, ELI will register the student for the appropriate course(s). ELI strives to register students for Advanced level courses at a time that does not conflict with their major classes. The tuition for each ELI course is $550.00, which is charged to the student’s account in HOWDY.
What courses are available?
ELI offers courses in: Composition (ELIC), Grammar (ELIG), Listening (ELIL), Oral Skills (ELIO), Reading (ELIR), and Vocabulary (ELIV). A complete course schedule can be found through the “Schedule of Classes” function in HOWDY.
Texas A&M English Language Proficiency Requirements
Texas A&M requires international students to verify their ability to speak, write, and understand the English language. One way to meet the requirement is to earn an A or B in Advanced level ELI courses.
The university’s English Language Proficiency Requirements vary based on a student’s classification:
- Requirements for international undergraduate students can be found on pages 68-69 of the current Texas A&M Undergraduate Catalog.
- Requirements for international graduate students can be found on the English Language Proficiency Portal from the Office of Graduate and Professional Studies.
ELI does not administer the ELPE examination. Texas A&M Data and Research Services (DARS) is responsible for administering the ELPE. All questions regarding the ELPE should be directed to DARS.
