| American Culture and Customs 100 |
The purpose of this course is to explore American culture and customs as expressed in various facets of American society, such as drama, sports, art, and music. American A&M student participation is integral to the curriculum. This exchange of cultural ideas provides both parties with invaluable insights into the diversity of the world in the 21st century. |
| Composition 100 |
For students with basic grammar and writing proficiency. It focuses on the development of paragragh-writing skills with emphasis on topic sentences, order of arrangement, and basic styles of paragraphs. It introduces the multi-paragraph structure, enabling students to work on the creation of short essays. |
| Composition 200 |
For students with intermediate writing proficiency. Prerequisite skills: Ability to write paragraphs using correct simple sentences employing methods of example, description, or comparison. Emphasis is on structure of the five-paragraph theme using introductory paragraphs, conclusions, and basic transitional elements. Emphasis is given to appropriate word choices, varied sentence patterns, and clear organizational patterns. |

For students with advanced writing proficiency. Prerequisite skills: Ability to write a multi-paragraph theme with use of simple sentence patterns. Emphasis is on specific content development employing methods of illustration, process, comparison-contrast and argumentation in short essays and a brief documented research paper. Further focus is on effective use of more sophisticated vocabulary choices, more complex sentence structures reflecting advanced grammar skills, and varied transitional elements. This course maybe available through WebCT. |

For students with basic grammar and writing proficiency. Emphasis is on recognition and use of basic punctuation, parts of speech, and sentence components. This course reviews capitalization, introduces use of articles, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, and question-formation styles. |
| Grammar 200 |
For students with intermediate proficiency. Reviews elements of Grammar 100. Prerequisite skills: Recognition of all parts of speech and appropriate use of basic sentence patterns and tenses in both speech and writing. Focus is on effective use of negatives, irregular verbs, modals, word forms, parallelism within sentences, and complementation. Use of complex sentences and subjunctive form are introduced and practiced. |
| Grammar 300 |
For students with advanced grammar proficiency. Prerequisite skills: Ability to organize and construct paragraphs using a variety of sentence patterns. Reviews elements of Grammar 200 and develops skills for complex and compound sentence formation, parallelism and complementation in the context of effective writing and speaking. Content covers review of verb tenses, comparisons, sentence patterns, coordination, and subordination. |
| Listening 100 |
For students with basic listening proficiency. This course is a laboratory class that introduces basic note-taking methods using audio and video tapes. Students learn to distinguish the sound system of English with an emphasis on developing skills to listen effectively to university-level lectures. |
| Listening 200 |
For students with intermediate listening proficiency. Prerequisite skills: Ability to take notes and knowledge of the sound system. This laboratory course focuses on development of more comprehensive note-taking and listening discrimination skills as they relate to university course work. Students listen to a range of subject materials varying in length and complexity to develop sound discrimination and note taking skills. |

For students with advanced listening proficiency. Prerequisite skills: Ability to take comprehensive notes and advanced discrimination skills. This laboratory course emphasizes comprehensive note-taking and listening strategies. Students learn to recognize, in context, the more precise and sophisticated lecture styles used in most university classes. Emphasis is given to developing prediction strategies. |

For students with basic level speaking skills. Emphasis is on development of pronunciation skills, question and answer techniques, and pattern drills. Students are given extensive practice in both guided and free conversation as a means to develop oral fluency. |

For students with intermediate proficiency in speaking. Prerequisite skills: Ability to engage in short discussions and dialogues. Emphasis is given to improving pronunciation and intonation skills. Practice is given in oral discussions, presentations, and conversational questioning techniques. |
| Oral Skills 300 |
For students with advanced level speaking skills. Prerequisite skills: Ability to converse in extensive discussions, demonstrating advanced pronunciation and intonation skills. Practice is given to perfecting pronunciation skills and intonation patterns. Students practice giving formal and informal presentations using both prepared and extemporaneous materials. Presentations and discussions are related to students' individual areas of interest in preparation for speaking required of university students and professionals. Students also practice fielding impromptu questions, debate techniques, and interviewing techniques as means of achieving oral fluency. |
| Reading 100 |
For students with basic reading and vocabulary skills. Emphasis is on content comprehension, recognition of main and supporting ideas, and development of vocabulary in context. This course introduces reading techniques including the skim-scan method, PQ3R method, and timed readings to develop each student's reading rate. It addresses dictionary skills, common prefixes, suffixes, and basic root forms enabling students to develop their vocabulary skills with less dependence on dictionary and translation techniques. It includes extensive practice in analysis of word choices and idiom usage. |

For students with intermediate reading proficiency. Prerequisite skills: Ability to recognize and comprehend main and supporting ideas and vocabulary in context. Course emphasis is on discussion and analysis of multi-page readings including recognition of main and supporting ideas. Context clues and word formation analysis aid in vocabulary development. Students learn to differentiate fact from opinion, develop idiom recognition skills, and work with timed readings addressing a variety of subjects to improve reading rate. |
| Reading 300 |
For students with advanced reading proficiency. Prerequisite skills: Ability to analyze multi-page readings, distinguish fact from opinion, and read at a steady rate. Students review methods of content comprehension and vocabulary development. Emphasis is given to increasing a student's reading rate, inferential ability, and skill in recognizing tone and point of view. Recognizing symbolic thought and abstraction are also addressed. Students read materials of extended length containing technical and non-technical information. |

For students with basic reading and vocabulary skills. Emphasis is on content comprehension, recognition of main and supporting ideas, and development of vocabulary in context. It addresses dictionary skills, common prefixes, suffixes, and basic root forms enabling students to develop their vocabulary skills with less dependence on dictionary and translation techniques. For students with intermediate level proficiency. Prerequisite skills: Recognition of basic words and word forms. Emphasis is on development of vocabulary analysis skills through use of synonym and antonym recognition along with additional prefix, suffix, and root formations. Students are encouraged to develop context analysis skills as they relate to university level subject matter. |

For students with advanced level proficiency. Prerequisite skills: Vocabulary recognition as related to the basic 2000 words of English. Emphasis is on developing word context analysis skills, advanced idiom usage, technical vocabularies, and denotation and connotation skills. This course maybe available through WebCT. |
