Conversation Partners

Through this popular program, students enrolled in oral skills classes have an opportunity to practice speaking English with an American student. The ELI students get to know American students on campus and find out what to expect as new students in "Aggieland." American students also have an excellent opportunity to learn about the customs of other cultures as they hear about the experiences of their ELI partners. ELI students usually get acquainted with their conversation partners during the second week of the semester.

Participant Feedback

One of my partners was from Chihuahua, Mexico and I learned that the Mexican government is not as different as I thought from the American government. I laughed a lot today, and I am reminded that this class is opening my eyes to other cultures in a very positive way. We ended the day by making fun of my Spanish speaking skills!

One of my partners was from Indonesia and we discussed the topic of families. We realized that our families have the same views on life. My partner and I had so much in common and I really enjoyed talking to her.

A Dining Experience with the students from ELI: The American students and the ELI students ate dinner at an ELI teacher's house. I brought meatloaf as my traditional American dish. I tried so many different types of food. My favorite was Korean noodles. I also drank coffee from Colombia, but it kept me up all night. I enjoyed talking with everyone.
